DoshasAyurveda sees the individual as a microcosm of the universe.  The universe is made out of five great elements called the “pancha mahabhutas”.  These elements are earth, water, fire, air, and ether.  The stars, planets, cosmic particles, and solar systems consist of permutations of these elements.  We are inseperable from this universe, and these same elements make up our bodies and minds.

These elements combine with one another and form three dynamic forces called doshas.  Doshas are primary life forces or biological humors.  They are only found in life forms, and their dynamism is what makes life happens.

The primary doshas are vata, pitta, and kapha.  There also exists dual doshas such as vata pitta, pitta kapha, kapha vata and so on.  On rare occasions there exists a person with all doshas in equal amounts.

Every person has all three doshas working within them, but in different proportions.  We are born with a specific balance of doshas.   In Ayurveda, we call this our prakruti, or our original constitution.  When we stray away from our “prakruti” by improper diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors, imbalances and disease develop.
